As I (and others) have written repeatedly, higher-functioning autism self-advocates are among the least aware of what our severely autistic loved ones need and are capable of — because most of them have had ZERO first-hand experience with them.

Writer Amy Fisher Lutz offered the self-advocacy community an opportunity to spend some time with her severely autistic son. Exactly one person took her up on the offer. John Elder Robison, high profile autism advocate and writer, said yes.
